This year's IASSID Europe Regional Congress was held here in Vienna from July 14-17 2014. IASSID is the International Association for the
Scientific Study of Intellectual
and Developmental Disabilities. Its goal is to promote the development of new knowledge, research and other scholarly activities, as well as the application of knowledge, to improve the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families and those who support them.
The theme of this year's congress was Pathway to Inclusion. I had the honour to give a presentation on "Mental Disability in Namibia". An important aspect to be learned in this respect is that ALL children have a right to education, to health, to be a contributing member of society. Each have talents and faculties which are unique and special, regardless of how different they may be from ´the mainstream´. And most importantly, each is born noble, with a dignity that must be nurtured and truly valued. I hope we can evolve into a type of society that can do that!
